THE FIRST PUPPETRY TRAIN IN THE WORLD!

Cyfle i'r teulu fwynhau diwrnod hanesyddol wrth brofi'r TREN PYPEDAU GYNTAF YN Y BYD. Tocynnau tren am y dydd- £2 - i'w prynu ar y tren ar y diwrnod. Bydd sioeau pypedau yn y gorsafoedd tren ac ar y tren ei hun, ac mewn nifer o theatrau gwahanol. Darllenwch y datganiad i'r wasg i ddarganfod mwy:

If you are travelling by train between Machynlleth and Pwllheli on Saturday 18 September you might be surprised by some strange sights on your journey. Look out for Chaz the charming and rather shy metallic mute, Lejo’s witty manipulation of a pair of wooden eyes, a puppet show from Germany where an audience of one dons a pair of headphones and watches the events unfold in a shoe box on their lap. Also making surprise appearances on the train will be Wales’ own popular Cwmni Cortyn with his string puppets in a box and a chance to peer down a ‘belescope’ into a belly button to see the drama unfold inside a huge tummy. On the platforms you will be met by the knight Sir Lupin and his downtrodden serfs and Atom, Chaz’s older and much taller brother who will be meeting and greeting the passengers on the platforms, as well as making a visit to Harlech castle and riding the donkeys on Barmouth beach!

The First Puppet Train in the World was the brain child of Festival Director Clare Williams who delights in surprising first time audiences in unusual settings.

‘The idea was planted in my head last year whilst travelling in South America’, said Clare . ‘On the train from Acquacaliente to Cusco the travellers were entertained by the railway staff to a fashion show- the carriage aisles becoming makeshift catwalks. It was a bizarre and hugely entertaining journey’

It struck her that this could be a brilliant way of attracting a new audience to puppetry- the scale of the puppets being perfectly suited to confined spaces. She had previously developed a very happy working relationship with Arriva Trains Wales who had generously laid on the carnival train for Carnifal Cambria which travelled the length of the Cambrian coast with revellers stopping en route to parade and perform to local townsfolk.

‘We really enjoy our association with Theatr Harlech’, said Gerwyn Jones of Cambrian Railways Partnership. ‘and have reaped rich rewards from our association with them- scooping the prestigious Arts and Business Community Award in 2010’

Besides the shananigans on the trains and platforms the Puppet Train will be stopping at 4 theatres en route where audiences can disembark and see some of Europe’s greatest puppetry shows- a beautiful and moving Journey of Turtle at the Tabernacle in Machynlleth at 10 o’clock in the morning, a fabulously colourful flourescent space adventure from Scotland in the Dragon Theatre, Barmouth at 12.30, the extraordinarily witty Hands Up! from the Netherlands at Theatr Harlech at 3pm and a shadow puppet play of Peter and the Wolf with the Prokoviev score at Neuadd Dwyfor, Pwllheli at 5.30pm

The Festival starts on Friday 17 September when local school children can have a sneak preview of some of the shows at Theatr Harlech and in the evening members of the public are invited to meet all the puppets and their handlers at a PowWow where they can learn about the making, the operation and the manipulation of puppets.

Wrth reswm rydyn ni’n siomedig na lwyddodd y Cyngor Celfyddydau i ganfod yr arian i gefnogi’n cynllun, ond rhaid cofio ein bod mewn cyfnod o ansicrwydd ariannol. 'Rydym yn gwbl ymroddedig i barhau i gynnal digwyddiadau yn y theatr ac mi fyddwn yn rhoi gwybod i chi o'r hyn sy'n digwydd.

OND…. dros y tair blynedd ddiwethaf rydyn ni wedi bod yn mynd â digwyddidau’r theatr allan i’r gymuned ac rydyn ni ar ben ein digon bod y Cyngor Celfyddydau’n cydnabod hynny - “rydych wedi dangos nad yw digwyddiadau celfyddydol o’r radd orau yn dibynnu’n llwyr ar adeilad y theatr, ” medden nhw.

Mae Bwrdd a Staff Theatr Harlech wedi bod yn prysur baratoi a HEDDIW rydym yn lansio cynllun gwaith newydd o’r enw CYTSER. Y bwriad ydi mynd â’r celfyddydau o’r adeilad ac i’r gymuned. Dros y chwe mis nesaf byddwn yn cydweithio gyda Chyngor Celfyddydau Cymru a Chyngor Gwynedd ar y cynlluniau yma gan ddatblygu theatr gymunedol, corau cymunedol, grwpiau dawns, gweithdai ffilm ac animeiddio a pherfformiadau gan berfformwyr o fri. Bydd y rhain ar gael nid yn unig yn Harlech ond ym Mhorthmadog, Blaenau a Dolgellau hefyd.

Mae cynllun CYTSER wedi ei ddatblygu gan Jacqui Banks, y Gyfarwyddwraig dros dro, a Clare Williams, cyn Cyfarwyddwraig y Theatr. Disgrifiodd Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru y cynllun fel “menter gyffrous ac arloesol a ddylai fynd â gwaith rhagorol y Theatr allan i’r cymunedau cyfagos.”

Dear Friend

You will probably have heard that last week Arts Council Wales decided not to continue funding Theatr Harlech as it has in the past and you – like us – will doubtless be concerned about the future of our lovely theatre.

Naturally we were disappointed that the Arts Council couldn’t find the money to support the programme but these are difficult times. We are committed to keeping events in the theatre and we will keep you informed about what is happening.

BUT ... over the last three years we have been reaching out to a broader community and were absolutely thrilled that the Arts Council recognised this saying “you have demonstrated that high quality arts activity is not solely dependent on a theatre building”.

The Board and staff of Theatr Harlech have been preparing and TODAY we are launching a new programme of work called CONSTELLATION which aims to take the arts out of the building and into the community. Working with Arts Council Wales and Cyngor Gwynedd over the next six months these plans will be developed to include community theatre, community choirs and dance groups, film and animation workshops and professional performances not just in Harlech but also in Porthmadog, Blaenau and Dolgellau.

The CONSTELLATION programme has been developed by Jacqui Banks Interim Director and Clare Williams previously Director of the Theatre. CONSTELLATION was described by Arts Council Wales as “an exciting and compelling initiative that should take the venue’s excellent work out into nearby communities”.

In the building, out of the building, in the Castle or on a train to Barmouth there is no arts in Gwynedd without you and we will keep you informed.

Roedd noson reggae Theatr Harlech yn lwyddiant mawr iawn, pawb wedi mwynhau gwrando ar 'DJ'io Dewi ac ar gerddoriaeth rhythmig y band reggae T&Latouche o fewn muriau ysblennydd Castell Harlech. Daeth pumdeg o adeiladwyr brwdfrydig o bob oed i’r digwyddiad yn ystod haf 2009, yn barod i neidio mewn i’r tywod gyda bwced a rhaw. Ar swn y chwiban, a gyda ond dwy awr i gwblhau eu cerfluniau unigryw, aeth y deg tim ati i greu cestyll, creaduriaid, a cherfluniaeth wych.

Y flwyddyn hon, bydd y gystadleuaeth yn symyd i draeth Bermo. Dewch lawr i’n gweld ni ac i gymeryd rhan Ddydd Sul yr 8fed o Awst am hanner dydd. Mae nifer o wobrau ar gael i’r timau sydd yn adeiliadu y cestyll tywod gorau!

Its almost time for the Summer Holidays, and that means the return of our annual sand sculpture event on the beach!
The event in summer 2009 saw fifty eager sandcastle builders of all ages get involved, all armed with bucket and spade and ready to jump right into the fun. On the sound of the whistle, and with only two hours to complete their unique artwork, the ten teams began creating castles, mythical creatures and brilliant sculptures.

This year, the competition is moving to Barmouth beach. Come down to see us and take part in the seaside fun on Sunday the 8th of August at midday. There are a number of prizes up for grabs for the teams with the best sandcastles!

Wardrobe Diaries

When we saw the picture of this show in rehearsal we thought ‘We want to go to that!’ so we wanted to show you too! This show is by a brand new and very ambitious Welsh theatre company called Citrus Arts. It is all about that time when you clear out your wardrobe and you find things like your favourite Spiderman pyjamas, the clothes that belonged to your grandparents, all those odd fancy dress costumes from parties long forgotten and the clothes you bought on a whim but never wear.

It takes place on 20 foot poles which are usually used in the Chinese circus! And, as you can see from the photo, there are two tonnes of clothing on stage used in inventive ways by the international cast of actors. The show feature music by Ted Barnes (composer to Beth Orton) and the lively soulful beats of Mr Scruff. The performance is at Theatr Harlech on Sunday September 27 at 6pm. Tickets are £8 (£5 for children) in advance or £10 on the door.

The company are also doing workshops, for those of you who want to learn a bit about how to do Chinese pole, on Friday 25 4-6pm, Saturday 26 11-1pm and Sunday 27 2-4pm at a cost of £6 per session. open to adults and children over 12.

¡Viva! Spanish and Latin American Festival of Film and Dance

Join us in a celebration of all things Spanish! From September 9th to the 12th, the theatre will be holding dance classes and showing screenings of classic Spanish films.

Join Neti Cockett in an introductory class to Flamenco dancing on Wednesday, September 9th at 7pm. Get ready to dance the night away in this special Spanish workshop for only £6 (£8 on the door). No previous experience necessary.

On Thursday 10th at 7:30pm, there will be a screening of the Spanish film, Secrets of the Heart. Set in provincial Spain in the 1960’s, the film depicts a child’s journey towards adulthood. Few films have so effectively captured the world of a child’s perceptions.

Bring along your dancing shoes on Saturday 12th for a Cuban dancing workshop. From 11am-5pm, Bill and Gaynor Jones will be teaching all the best Cuban dances- from the Cha-Cha, to the Merengue, to the classic Salsa. Again, no experience necessary, just a passion for the dance! The price for the workshop is £10 in advance, £12 on the door.

The dance inspired day will conclude with a screening of Tango at 7:30pm, a film by Carlos Saura, about one man’s quest to create the ultimate tango film.

There’s something for everyone in this special festival, so come along! Prices for the films are £5 for adults, £4 for children.

CATRIN FINCH- ELECTRIC DREAM

Catrin Finch a'i thelynnau electrig yn ail-greu ar newydd-wedd rhai o alawon gwerin Cymraeg mwyaf poblogaidd. Yn ymuno â Catrin fydd band o 5 cerddor amryddawn.

Catrin Finch’s latest project reinvigorates some of Wales’s most traditional folk tunes as well as some of her own original compositions. Performing along to some cool beats and a five piece jazz band, Catrin will be fronting the show on 2 electric harps enhanced by some new groundbreaking sound effects.

Roedd yn achos o fywyd yn dynwared celfyddyd ar Arfodir y Cambrian ar ddydd Sadwrn y 25ain o Orffennaf gyda digwyddiad Carnifal Cambria’n cymeryd blaen y llwyfan.

Cafodd y digwyddiad, a drefnwyd gan Theatr Harlech, ei ysbrydoli gan ddarn o farddoniaeth enwog Robert Graves ynglŷn â ‘phethau’ rhyfedd yn dod allan o’r ogofau glan môr ger Criccieth.

Bu nifer fawr o fobl yn gysylltiedig â’r digwyddiad a oedd yn cynnwys cyfres o weithdai lle cynhyrchwyd ystod eclectic o wisgoedd er mwyn bywiogu’r darn barddoniaeth. Ar y dydd Sadwrn cafodd ‘pethau’ rhyfedd 2009 ei ryddhau ar drefydd Abermaw, Harlech a Chriccieth fel rhan o dair Orymdaith Grand a oedd yn cynnwys digwyddiadau yng nghestyll Harlech a Chriccieth.

CRACKING CARNIFAL CAMBRIA CONNECTS COMMUNITIES

It was a case of life imitating art on the Cambrian Coast on Saturday the 25th of July as the ‘cracking’ Carnifal Cambria event took centre stage.

The event, organised by Theatr Harlech, was inspired by Robert Graves’s famous poem about strange ‘things’ coming out of the sea caves near Criccieth.

A large number of local people were involved with the event which had included a series of workshops where an eclectic range of costumes were produced to bring the poem to life. On the Saturday the ‘things’ of 2009 were unleashed on the towns of Barmouth, Harlech and Criccieth as part of three Grand Parades which included events at Harlech and Criccieth Castles.

Ar ôl misoedd o ymarfer a pharatoi, perfformiwyd y Mabinogion yng Nghastell Harlech ar yr 13 a 14 o Orffennaf, gan dros 200 o blant ysgolion uwchradd Gwynedd. Er y tywydd di-galon, roedd y plant a'r cynulleidfa yn llawn cyffro a bwrlwm, yn barod am y sioeau o'u blaenau. I gychwyn y perfformio, cafodd dros 200 o blant ysgol cynradd ac ymwelwyr ei diddannu ar y p'nawn dydd Llun, gyda drama, pypedwaith, cerddoriaeth a llawer llawer mwy! Ond yn anffodus, troi am y gwaeth wnaeth y tywydd, ac erbyn i'r nos gyrraedd, roedd gormod o lawer o law yn disgyn, ac roedd rhaid canslo'r sioe.

Er nad oedd y tywydd lawer gwell ar y dydd Mawrth, roedd y plant, yr artisitiaid a'r criw yn benderfynnol o berfformio sioe gwerth chweil i'r cynulleidfa, a dangos yn uion yr holl waith caled a'r paratoi oedd wedi mynd i fewn i'r sioe. A dyna yn union ddigwyddodd!

Cafodd y cynulleidfa wledd o berfformiad, o weld pobl yn cerdded ar stiltiau i weld tafluniadau anhygoel ar furiau'r castell; o weld pobl yn taflu tân a fflamau, i glywed cerddoriaeth byw gan fand pres a band samba; actio, dawnsio, pypedwaith a gormod o bethau o lawer i mi allu enwi i gyd.

Roedd y sioe yn lwyddiant anhygoel, a dylai pawb oedd yn rhan ohono fod yn falch iawn o'u gwaith caled a'u hymdrechion diddiwedd.

REVIEW: MABINOGION, Castell Harlech, Tuesday 14 July, 2009

Audience wowed by Magnificent MABINOGION at Castell Harlech.Those lucky enough to be at Castell Harlech on Tuesday night witnessed aspectacle-the like of which has never been seen.One member of the audience wrote to us:'It was a splendid event in a great setting. Talk about "animatingpublic spaces"....the towers, the walls, the battlements and everysquare yard of the green was used. In one particularly striking momentone of the young characters went up a ladder and disappeared through aarcher's slit window....! Even the car park was used.

The project is based on the ancient Welsh mythic tales of theMabinogion - told in four sections or branches and last night each wasgiven its own treatment by over 300 young people mostly from secondaryschools (Ysgolion Eifionydd, Ardudwy, Moelwyn, Berwyn, Tywyn and Gader) butincluding a contingent from late primary ages. All the secondary schools in the area have been working on the project for over18 months developing the storyline and the media for telling it. Added in were community groups - a circus group from a Communities Firstproject, athletes from a gymnastic club, fire jugglers, a samba band, abrass band, a solo double bass, a film projection which includedspecially made animated images plus computer generated effects, lightingeffects and a very imaginative audio track some of which had beenspecially composed by college students. Live film of the action wasprojected onto the castle walls along with the other images.

Artists had been working with the young people over several months toproduce props made of a great variety of materials - there were ships,banners, full costumes; there were also fight sequences, dance sequencesand choreographed crowd scenes. Solo singing was featured as well as acappella choral singing....A fantastic achievement, well done'

Independent Ballet Wales performed a wonderful production of Shakespeare's famous Midsummer Night's Dream at Harlech Castle on Saturday, 13th June. The sun was shining and the audience came in their droves with chairs, blankets and picnics to enjoy the show in the historic castle! With choreography by Darius James, costumes by critically acclaimed welsh designer Yvonne Greenleaf, and music by Mendelssohn, it was a truly special and unique midsummer night !

Taking the Mabinogion from the page and into Castell Harlech so that you can step into the stories and be carried along on the wave of action…

Over the past year 6 secondary schools in Blaenau, Porthmadog, Harlech, Dolgellau, Bala and Tywyn have been working on various images from the Mabinogion, both the famous and the less well known, with the sole intention of pushing artistic boundaries and bringing the stories to life. A great opportunity for youngsters to see their peers performing in a spectacle that has been devised by over 20 artists, including Mai Tomos Ifans and Cath Aran, and 400 secondary school pupils from across Gwynedd. With circus, dance, drama, digital projections, live music, puppetry and pageantry it promises to be an unmissable, unforgettable show

On Saturday 27 September families from all over Gwynedd gathered at TheatrHarlech to create a 3 metre tall rod puppet of Blodeuweudd- the girl fromWales' greatest saga The Mabinogion who was created from floweres by a magician to become the bride of the hero Lleu. The event marked the launch of the biggest community project to happen in the history of the theatre.It is the start of a 10 month project involving 400 young people which will culminates in a multi media presentation of the Mabinogi in July 2009. Theproject also co-incided with the launch of the cultural Olympiad- a 4 year project of arts activities across the UK in preapartion for the 2012 OlympicGames.

Working with carnival artists Jude Davies and Ben Wood the local people also created bird masks and a huge owl puppet and brought the town of Harlech to a standstill as they processed through the town to the castle where theyenacted a masqued play of the scene from the Mabinogi when the girl offlowers is punished for betraying her husband by being turned into an owl. '

Lleuwen Steffan

Lleuwen hails from the Welsh speaking heartlands of North Wales and although her vocal training has been essentially classical, early influences like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald have taken deep root in her soul. Lleuwen has released an album of hymns; God Only Knows in 2005 and has recent released solo album Penmon, reflecting the Welsh landscape which inspires her. One thing's for sure when Lleuwen sings, it sounds like she’s giving away her whole soul! She makes each song breathe with longing, or ‘hiraeth’.

Mae Lleuwen yn dod o fro Gymraeg Ynys Môn ac erbod ei hyfforddiant yn glasurol, dylanwadau cynnar hi oedd Billie Holiday ac Ella Fitzgerald oedd wedi ei ysbrydoli. Bedouin Jerry Can

An extraordinary and unique group from the Egyptian Sinai Desert. The group of semi-nomadic musicians, storytellers and poets are visiting the theatre to delight audiences with songs and fables of trusty camels, sheep rustlers and unrequited love. The act is truly unique, with the performers exchanging traditional instruments for the Egyptian Lyre accompanied by infectious rhythms played on tablas, frame drums, clay jugs, ammunition boxes and jerry cans.

Ember

In a more intimate café environment, you can enjoy Ember, a very much in demand Welsh/American duo. Their simple yet moving music centres on the miraculous blending of two very different voices: that of Welsh songstress Emily Williams, who sails through the mix with her violin and sets up chunky rhythms with her nylon-strung guitar, and that of Rebecca Sullivan of Utah who fingerpicks a sparkling steel-string, and breaks out the harmonica for a song or two. The pair are engaging and humorous performers who have a natural repartee with audiences and perform their own folk sound.

Sioe pypedau unigryw ac addasiad o glasur o stori Jean Giono am fugail o Ffrainc sy’n planu coedwig ac yn trawsnewid anialwch wrth wneud.

A captivating puppet adaptation by Puppet State Theatre Company of Jean Giono’s environmental cult classic. A French shepherd sets out with his dog to plant a forest and transform a barren wasteland. A uniquely memorable blend of comedy and inspiring storytelling. Adults will be as charmed ( if not more so) as the children. The hit of last year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Ymunwch a chyfarwyddar cerdd Swansea City Opera ar Ddydd Sadwrn, Chwefror 16, 2yh-5yh i ddysgu cytganau o’r Ffliwt Hud a pherfformio yn yr opera fel rhan o’r cynhyrchiad ar Ddydd Sadwrn, Mawrth 15. Byddwch yn canu wrth eistedd y tu ol i’r gerddorfa. Ni fydd yn rhaid i chi wisgo yn arbennig a ni fydd yn rhaid i chi action. Bydd y gweithdy a’r ymarfer yn costio £10 ond cewch weld yr opera yn rhad ac am ddim.

If you want to be in an opera…
Join the musical director of Swansea City Opera on Saturday 16 February, 2pm-5pm to learn choruses from The Magic Flute and then perform with the cast on Saturday 15 March. You will sing as a choir from the auditorium behind the orchestra– no costumes and no acting. Tickets £10 for the workshop and you get to see The Magic Flute for free!

Harlech Challenge

Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in six words. Regarded as his best work, he wrote ‘For Sale: baby shoes, never worn’.

Theatr Harlech presents you with the same challenge. Write a short story using only six words in either English or Welsh. Email entries to clare@theatrharlech.com by 1st April and the best will be printed in the summer brochure.

If you need some inspiration, Wired Magazine asked famous writers to try their hand at the challenge, below are some of the answers they came up with.
